Let understand its components.
1. What is ESI?
ESI, or Employees’ State Insurance, it is a social security scheme designed to provide financial and medical support to eligible employees in India. In this both the employee and employer contribute a small percentage of the employee’s wages towards the ESI scheme. It provides benefits such as medical care, sickness benefits, maternity benefits, and financial support in case of employment-related injury or disability.
2. ESI Formula
ESI contributions are calculated as a percentage of an employee’s wages. The current contribution rates are 0.75% for employees and 3.25% for employers.
Employee ESI Contribution = Monthly Wages × 0.75%
Employer ESI Contribution = Monthly Wages × 3.25%
For example, if an employee’s monthly ESI wages are ₹20,000, the employee contributes ₹150 and the employer contributes ₹650, making the total monthly ESI contribution ₹800.
3. Eligibility for ESI
Employees working in establishments covered under the ESI Act are generally eligible for ESI benefits if their monthly wages are up to ₹21,000. Both the employer and employee contribute to the ESI scheme
4. Employees Covered Under the Act vs. Not Covered
Employees who meet the eligibility conditions and work in establishments covered under the ESI Act can receive benefits under the ESI scheme. Their employer is required to register eligible employees and make the applicable ESI contributions. Employees working in establishments that do not fall under ESI coverage, or employees whose wages exceed the prescribed eligibility limit at the time the relevant contribution period begins, may not be covered in the same way.
5. ESI Contribution Rates for Employee and Employer
Under the ESI scheme, both employees and employers contribute towards ESI. The employee contribution rate is 0.75% of wages, while the employer contributes 3.25% of wages. Together, the total ESI contribution comes to 4% of the employee’s wages.
6. ESI Wage Limit
The general wage limit for ESI coverage is ₹21,000 per month.
7. ESI Contribution and Payment Due Date
The employer is responsible for deducting the employee’s ESI contribution, adding the employer’s share, and depositing the total contribution with ESIC. The contribution is paid monthly and is generally required to be deposited within 15 days from the end of the calendar month in which it falls due.
