Free Sales job description templates for 10 roles including Sales Manager and Business Development Manager

Quick Answer: Where can I find free Sales job description templates?

Sales job descriptions get vague more often than any other department’s – “driven self-starter” and “excellent communication skills” show up in nearly every one, without saying much about what the person will actually be measured on. This guide covers ready-to-use templates for the ten sales roles hiring managers ask for most:

• Sales Manager
• Sales Associate
• Business Development Manager
• Channel Sales Manager
• Account Executive
• Sales Executive
• Inside Sales Executive
• VP of Sales
• Sales Coordinator
• Customer Success Manager

Each comes with a free downloadable Word template you can adapt to your organisation.

For every department I’ve written job descriptions, sales are the one where companies most often confuse the title with the job. A “Business Development Manager” posting that’s really describing an Account Executive role. A “Sales Executive” ad that’s actually hiring for inside sales but never says so.

I’ve tried to provide each role templates related to sales job, and it’s worth applying the same discipline when you adapt them.

This is a team leadership role, not an individual contributor stretch title – worth stating plainly in the JD, because “Sales Manager” gets used loosely enough that candidates sometimes apply expecting an IC role with a nicer name.

The role centers on leading and coaching a sales team, setting and tracking targets, forecasting revenue for leadership, and stepping in on key deals when a rep needs support closing. Companies typically want 5-8 years of sales experience with at least 2 years actually managing a team.

The BDM title gets stretched to cover almost anything sales-adjacent, so it’s worth being specific in the JD about what “business development” actually means at your company – new market entry, partnership building, or straightforward new-logo hunting are three very different jobs wearing the same title.

Once that’s clear, the core of the role usually involves identifying and pursuing new business opportunities, building relationships with prospective clients or partners, developing market entry or expansion strategies, and working closely with sales and marketing to convert opportunities into pipeline.

Account Executive Job Description Template

If BDM is about opening new relationships, Account Executive is usually about closing them – this role sits squarely in the deal-closing part of the funnel, picking up qualified opportunities and taking them to signed contract.

Day to day, that means managing the sales pipeline from qualified lead to close, running product demos and presentations, negotiating pricing and contract terms, and handing off cleanly to account management or customer success once the deal closes.

Distinct from field sales in one key way: this role rarely leaves the desk, running the entire sales motion over phone, email, and video rather than in-person meetings – which changes what “good at sales” actually looks like day to day.

Responsibilities typically include making outbound calls to prospective customers, qualifying inbound leads, running product demos remotely, and maintaining accurate records in the CRM as deals move through the pipeline.

Sales Coordinator Job Description Template

A support role rather than a quota-carrying one, and worth labelling that way clearly in the JD – candidates browsing sales roles need to know upfront this isn’t a commission-driven closing job.

The work involves coordinating sales team schedules and client meetings, preparing sales reports and pipeline documentation, processing orders and maintaining CRM data hygiene, and acting as the connective tissue between sales, finance, and operations on deal logistics.

Customer Success Manager Job Description Template

Sits after the sale, not before it – this role owns the relationship once a deal closes, which makes it fundamentally different from the acquisition-focused roles above even though it often reports into the same sales or revenue organisation.

The role covers onboarding new customers and driving adoption, monitoring account health and flagging churn risk early, identifying upsell and expansion opportunities within existing accounts, and serving as the customer’s primary point of contact after the sale.

Sales Associate Job Description Template

Often an entry-level title, though what it actually covers varies more by company than almost any other role on this list – worth defining precisely rather than assuming the title carries enough meaning on its own.

Common responsibilities include assisting customers with product inquiries, processing sales transactions, maintaining product or service knowledge, and supporting senior sales staff with lead follow-up.

Channel Sales Manager Job Description Template

A specialised role built around selling through partners rather than directly to end customers -distributors, resellers, or system integrators – which makes it a meaningfully different skill set from direct sales even at a similar seniority level.

The role involves recruiting and onboarding new channel partners, managing and growing existing partner relationships, training partners on product knowledge and sales process, and resolving channel conflict when it comes up between partners or between partner and direct sales.

Sales Executive Job Description Template

The most generic title on this list, and also the most commonly misused – worth being unusually specific in the JD about what this particular Sales Executive role actually does, since the title alone tells a candidate almost nothing.

At most companies, the role covers generating and qualifying leads, conducting client meetings and presentations, negotiating and closing sales, and maintaining relationships with existing clients for repeat business.

VP of Sales Job Description Template

A senior leadership role responsible for the entire sales function’s strategy and performance – this is the person leadership holds accountable when revenue targets are missed, and the JD should reflect that level of ownership.

Core responsibilities include setting overall sales strategy and revenue targets, building and scaling the sales organization, managing key enterprise relationships personally, and reporting directly to the CEO or leadership team on sales performance.
